Sunday, 29 June. Day visit to old mine tunnels in Venterskroon

The purpose will be to check on the status (i.e. numbers and species) of bats that use these tunnels for hibernation in winter. We will not catch any bats and we will merely observe them from a distance, with minimum disturbance in small groups of people at a time. Also, there will be no photographs taken (due to the flashes).

We will see at least a few bats (Geoffroy's horseshoe most likely) but we might find that the hibernating colonies have not moved in yet. Anyhow, a no-show is still interesting from a scientific point of view.

Venterskroon is about 20 min outside Parys and about 1hr 20 min from Jhb. We hope to arrive there at 10 a.m.
We would like to limit the number to about 15 or less people to keep it practical.
Therefore if you are interested, please let me know ASAP.
Depending on who and how many people are coming we can probably make travel arrangements to fit maximum people in minimum cars and drive through in convoy.

Cost: R 50 per person for the guide

NB: At most events such as the above we will erect mist nets and harp traps in order to determine what bat species are present in the area and to learn more about them. Data are collected from the captured bats by weighing them, taking  measurements, photographs, biopsies, call recordings, etc. The bats are then released. Any interesting data are passed onto conservation and scientific groups.’
