Makapansgat Caves: 19 - 21 September 2003
This National Heritage site is located near Mokopane (Potgietersrus).
Approximately 12 caves have been explored here. The goals were to
quantify the species of bats here and to survey the total quantity of
bats in this area.
Some of the bat species captured and identified were:
- Common Slit-faced Bats, Nycteris thebaica
- Temminck’s Hairy Bat, Myotis tricolor
- Schreiber’s Long-fingered Bats, Miniopterus schreibersii -
Consensus was that there were several thousand – possibly about
eleven to twelve thousand bats present
- Long-tailed Greater Serotine Bat, Eptesicus hottentotus
- Geoffroy’s Horseshoe Bat, Rhinolophus clivosus
